SMALLPOX EPIDEMIC.

MORE CASES IN SYDNEY. COAIPULSORY VACCINATION. [By Electric Telegraph—Copyright] 1 United Press Association.] Sydney, August 2U. Eleven cases of smallpox were reported in the city to-day. Seventythree patients are in quarantine, and there are 160 convalescents. Toe total smallpox cases to date arc 530. There is another case at Lithgow, where a hotel waitress is infected. She had not been to Sydney, and had not been in contact with' anybody known to be infected. Replying to a deputation from the Health Society, Air Flowers said that nothing was worse than panic legislation, but a Bill dealing with compulsory vaccination would be introduced shortly. He proposed also to enlarge the powers ol the Board of Health. The suggestion to proclaim Sydney a c ity whence nobody was able to move unless vaccinated would be a veij drastic step and lead to chaos. Replying to a question in Parliament, Air Flowers said that 1 2 contacts bad been quarantined since the outbreak, of whom four became infected. V

The following smallpox bulletin wa;issued this evening;— T Tho district health officer at Auckland (Dr. Monk) reports that no fresh cases have been reported in Anclehind since yesterday’s report. One case is reported from Wairie, • seven idles from 'Kaoo. The reports from i,ho Waikato district are good. 'The district health officer at Wellington (Dr. Chesson) reports that the precautions, vaccination, and surveillance of contacts with tho case ox s.s. Delphic are being continued.
