THE CALIFORNIA WRECK. EXCEPT 83, ALL PERISHED. [By Electric telegraph—Copyright. [United Press Association.] Vancouver, August 19. The steamer State of California, which struck an uncharted rock neai Cambrian Bay, Juneau, Alaska, and became a total wreck, hit the rocks at full speed, tearing the greater portion of her bottom out. The vessel sank in a few minutes. Forty of the crew and 43 passengers escaped in boats, but the others were drowned. The majority were in their cabins. The disaster occurred at daylight, but the vessel sank too quickly to allow of many rescues.
