Medical testimony before the Judicial Commission on the examination of wounds indicted during riots, proved that tlie largest proportion was caused by firearms in the hands ol the rabble. “A HELL UPON EARTH.” Johannesburg, August 15. Before the Judicial Commission, Inspector Fitzgerald, in an affidavit, said lie took full responsibility for organising the special police. On July 5, (JOG men, armed, were posted in the suburbs for 48 hours at a time. Europeans were endeavoring to induce the natives to strike and defy the compound managers, and also cut off the •water and light supplies. Had the attempt succeeded they would have let 200,000 savages loose, in which case Johannesburg would have become a hell upon earth.
