CARGO BROACHING.' [Per Press Association.]' Auckland, August 12. This afternoon Detective Gourlav arrested two quartermasters' and an A.B. off the-steamer Delphic, on charges of cargo-broaching. The allegation is that last Friday, between one and two o'clock in the morning, they opened the hatch of one of the holds, and by means of a rope hoisted from the cargo a case of whisky, which was drunk and distributed amongst friend*. They will appear before the Police Court to-ihorrow morning; THE SPORT OF COURSING. Dunedin, August 12. At a meeting of the commtitee of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals to-day, it was unanimously decided to call a meeting of members of the Society to discuss, the question of the cruelty of coursing within enclosures. A legal opinion will probably be obtained before the mooting is held.
DAMAGES FOR LIBEL. Auckland, August 12. At the Supreme Court to-day, Thomas Walsh was awarded £SOO damages against the- Federation of Labor for libellous statements contained in a pamphlet entitled "The Tragic Story of the Waihi Strike." The amount of the claim was £IOOO. THE EDUCATION SYSTEM. Timaru, August 12. The Education Board to-day passed a resolution endorsing a circular from Dunedin urging the Minister to adopt some other method of determining salaries than the average attendance; also urging that the salaries he increased, as the teachers were not paid equitably: compared with other branches of the Public Service. The Board granted Misses ' Lindsay and Caskey (Timaru South) and Miss Swop (Tenuika) permission to exchange with three Canadian teachers for one year.
