HANDSOME GIFT OF PICTURES

The Countess of Carlisle has presented seven valuable pictures from the Howard collection to the National Gallery, including Carracio’s “Three Maryies,” purchased in 1798 from the Orleans collection for 4000gns, and Gainsborough’s unfinished portrait of Mrs Graham. FOUR JAPS KILLED. Ottawa, August 8. Riots have occurred at Salem, Oregon. Three Japanese were killed and a fourth fatally injured. The cause of the riots is unknown. BRITAIN’S TRADE FIGURES. Saekville is left £IO,OOO and an annuity of £2OOO is left to his brother Walter.
