PERILOUS EARTH SLIDE.
White Cliff* (N.S.W.), July 28. A miner, John Mayes, while removing logs from an abandoned shaft, was carried into the gaping mouth by moving earth. His son, a mere lad, rati for assistance. An attempt was mado to pull the man out with a rope, but his body was tightly held by the loose mullock. Workers set to with shovels to shift a dump 15ft. high. Twice the man's head was buried out of sight. He was finally released after four hours' imprisonment. He was not seriouslj injured, although exhausted after his thrilling experience. , His escape from death was a marvellous one, and due to the efforts of the 20 men, who were kept going with shovels the whole timo keeping back the fast running loose earth, while others were engaged extricating the entombed man at the bottom of the C-:asm.
