MR MASSEY IN ATTENDANCE
[Per Press Association.]
Wellington, July 30
A conference of representatives of Agricultural and Pastoral Societies opened to-day. The Premier (Mr Massey), in an address, referred to the good work done hy the conference in the past, and said the outlook for
farmers was never better. At the same time, he sincerely hoped farmers would see their way to grow more wheat. There had been a reduction in the production of cereal crops, and this meant an enhanced rise in the cost of living. He noticed that a remit would come up for discussion urging the Government to construct light railways for the development of the country. “There is no doubt,” ho added, “that the present railway system is not keeping abreast with the progress of settlement. Some moans were required, and should he devised.
whereby facilities may I»o provided i'or the phonic on the land to pet their produce to market. This, in my opinion, can only he done by a system of light railways,”
