CONTRACT v. DAY LABOUR,

A return compiled by the chief engineer ot rauways shows that 404 milefc" of railway were constructed under th<» contract system and cost £4309 per mile, whereas 767 miles were built by day labor and cost £3321 per mile. These figures were used by Mr Griffiths in support of his contention that day labor was the cheaper 6ystem.
SUGAR AND WHITE LABOR
Following the passage of the Sugar Bills in Queensland Parliament, a Federal proclamation lias been issued abolishing the excise and bounty on sugar grown in Australia by white labour.
