EVENTS OF THE DAY
[Per Press Association.]
Carterton, July 11
It is estimated that between , 4000 and 5000 people attended the welcome home to Sir W. C. Buchanan, K. 8., M.P., at Carterton yesterday. Speeches were made by the chairmen of all the Wairarapa local bodies and mayors of boroughs. The Caledonian Pipe Band was in attendance and also the Carterton Brass Band. .A presentation to Sir Walter was made by Mr J. Coradine, the Mayor of. Masterton, on behalf of the Committee, of a Highland bull, on the horns attached being a board bearing the inscription : “Gillie Reoch do na scant! duine grinn,” meaning “Brindle laddie to the grand old man.” Sir Walter Buchanan gracefully acknowledged the gift. Tugs of war, a five-mile harrier event, and a ladies’ hockey match, Kiwis (Dalefield) v. Kiatoas (Greytown) provided interest for the afternoon. A team from the Waingawa moat works won the tug-of-war. The harriers’ race resulted: Bradbury 1, Perston 2, MacKersey 3. Time, 22min 20sec. The hockey match was a draw, one goal each. Moving pictures were taken of the whole of the events. A remarkable feature was the number of motor cars, over 150 being present. Refreshments were provided free to all.
