THE ÜBIQUITOUS HATPIN

[Per Press Association.] Invercargill, July 9.

A number of young women who had offended against the unprotected hatpin by-law, in tramcars, were prosecuted to-day. A fine of five shillings was imposed in most cases, while others were convicted and discharged. The magistrate intimated that future offenders would be more heavily fined.

The Christchurch Presbytery to-day received a deputation from the Peace Society, re the lads undergoing detention at Ripa Island for breaches of the Defence Act, and a committee was set up to ascertain the facts.
