THE OPENING CEREMONY

Tbo new Federal Parliament was formally opened by a Commission consisting of Justices Barton and Isaacs. The members were sworn in at a brilliant gathering. Miss Isaacs attended her father at the opening. She is not only the first woman who has acted as a Judge’s Associate, but the first to accompany a judge at the opening of Parliament and the swearing in of members. The Governor’s Speech stated that owing to ministers having only recently assumed office, he was unable vet to mature legislative proposals. He, therefore, asked for an adjournment after Supply had been granted. Mr Johnson, unopposed, was elected Speaker.

The mace which the Fisher Government removed, was restored. Mr Givens was elected President of the Senate.

Both houses passed six weeks’ Supply. The House adjourned till August 12th, and the Senate to August 13th, to enable the Government to prepare a policy. Mr Fowler, ministerialist, was elected chairman of committees of the House, and Mr O’Keefe to a similar position in the Senate. Senator Ready gave notice of a motion in favour of the establishment of a fleet of Commonwealth-owned over-seas and interstate steamers.

ELECTION IRREGULARITIES,

Mr Cook, after consultation with Mr Fisher, announced that an inquiry would be held into the alleged double voting at the elections.
