EDUCATION. [Per Press Association.] June 30. The Hon. James Allen, Minister oi Education, interviewed to-night on the omission from the Governor's Speech of any reference to the education problems, said that it was highly improbable that any legislation affecting education would be introduced this session. His absence in England during the recess prevented him from giving the attention he would have liked to a subject which was so vitally important that it required tin greatest care and consideration. Very probably legislation would be introduced next session. He thought that the present system was proceeding satisfactorily, and there was no need to rush reform. The Minister added thai the Education Commission's report, tallied last session, would be referred to hv the Education Committee.
THE CHEESE OUTPUT. Invercargill, June 30
This season's final shipment oi cheese from the Bluff was taken h} the OTimaroa to-day, for transhipment co tne Connthic, at Wellington. The whole consignment, comprising 2o\, cases, is for London, malung a total output for the 1913 season of 79,01!j cases, compared with 82,729 cases last year, a decrease of 3219 cases.

OPEN SEASON FOR SEALS. Invercargill, June 30. An open season for taking sealr, the first for nineteen years, commences to-morrow, and several parties are leaving for the grounds from the Bluft and Colac Bay.
A KLEPTOMANIAC. Wellington, July 1
A young married woman was seen leaving a local draper's shop yesterday with a number of stolen articlcb of drapery in her possession, some ot which were pilfered from another shop. She was arrested and brought before Mr Riddell, S.M., to-day, ana fined 40s, or seven days on one charge, and ordered to come up for sentence when called on on a second charge. It was stated that accused has threeyoung children, has been in indigent circumstances for some time, and when arrested was slightly under the influence of liquor.
FINE VOYAGE UNDER OIL. Auckland, July 1. The Niagara arrived at 2.30 a.m., having maintained a speed of 15i knots during the voyage of 0330 miles, using oil fuel. Mr Smart, the Union Company's superintending engineer, states that oil fuel has so far given complete satisfaction, there having been no hitch during the voyage. Oil proved more economical than coal, and avoided deterioration of ships' plates through contact with damp coal in bunkers. Four thousand tons of oil were shipped at Vancouver and a further supply of 350 tons at Honolulu. ENGINE DRIVERS' TROUBLES Wellington, July 1.
A deputation representing tho Engine Drivers' Union of New Zealand waited oh the Premier to-day and urged that the, Conciliation and Arbitration Act be so amended as to provide for a Dominion award for engine drivers. It was pointed out that through a flaw in the existing Act the engine drivers employed in a sawmill or factory could only obtain the maximum wages given under the particular award affecting their fellow workers at a sawmill or factory. Mr Massey said he was prepared to grant the. request respecting the Dominion award. Tho Bill which is now in the hands of the printers contained a clause which he expected would meet tho deputation's requirements.
