A RAILWAY COLLISION.
EXPRESS TRAIN WRECKED.
[By Electric Telegraph—Copyright] [United Press Association.] Sydney, June 29. - The first section of the Sydney? Melbourne express narrowly escaped disaster at Rock station. ' It was de- ■: fleeted on to a loop-line, and crashed into and cut through a stationary goods train, smashing several trucks. The engine of the express was disabled. The driver of the latter, realising thqt i something was wrong**- .< jambed on the brakes and saved the situation. A PLUCKY DRIVER. (Received 9.50 a.m.) ♦ the stationary train consisted of thirty empty trucks, and the speed of the express was greatly reduced by the brakes. Otherwise the impact would have been heavier and the result more serious. All the trucks were damaged.. The driver of the express stuck to his post. The fireman jumped off after putting on the brakes.
There is a conflict of evidence re-, garding the signals. Is is supposed that something went wrong with the interlocking gear. The line was apparently set at “dear” when it was not.
