A CONVICTION SQUASHED.

' The appeal of Colin Gerald, a wellknown farmer, against his conviction by. the Magistrate for' stealing a motor tyre' and other articles, was upheld by Judge Williams. The defence. was fihat, accused was at home some mires away on the night of the robbery. His Honor said additional evidence in support of this was adduced, and a much stronger easejinade out than when the case was before the Magistrate. Two independent witnesses testified to having met accused at his home on the night of the robbery, and if the Court disregarded their evidence, ho would have to find they had conspired to defeat justice by swearing falsely. The conviction was squashed.
