THE ETHICS OE PRIZE-FIGHTING

A Calgary jury acquitted Pelkey on a charge of the manslaughter of McCarthy. Chief Justice Harvey decided that any encounter with fists, even privately arranged, constituted a prize fight." Such a decision practically prohibits boxing in Canada, if the authorities choose to interfere. The jury held that Pelkey's blow bad not.killed McCarthy. The judge declared that if the jury had found Pelkey guilty he would not have inflicted any sentence, as the case was obviously one brought in order to define the law governing prize fights. FOOTBALL. LEAGUE GAME. A POPULAR GAME. (Received 9.55 a.m.) Sydney, June 25. The attendance at the four New South Wales-Zealand League matches was 10,513, and the takings £5517. £5517.
The hold which the Northern Union game has gained in Sydney may he ganged from the fact that 35,000 people attended the first Saturday match, when the races at llandwick were a counter attraction, and 24,500 watched the Monday match in pouring rain. The gross gate receipts for the two matches was £3046. It is anticipated that the New Zealanders will take hack with them many hundreds as their share of the tour profits, with which to establish a fighting fund of to assist in the acquiring of badljr needed league grounds throughout the Dominion.

Melbourne, June 25
The Dunlop Company announce that the Warrnamhool-Melbourne road race has been abandoned, owing to the authorities refusing to allow the 'finish at Haymarket grounds. The crush at the finish constituted a great danger to the competitors and public. As compensation, the Company inaugurates an Australasian teams relay road race of 100 miles, giving over £2OO in prizes.
