The Herald, referring to the annexation of Wallis and Futnna Islands, says: ,"It is said with truth that in the pacific we lost our foothold after having gained a foothold on more than..half the groups. Oceanic Island, the first to. he "evangelised by British missionaries, has fallen into foreign hands. Tonga is now tho only other protectorate of importance, and there are many who believed that Britain's delay, in annexing this group may be dangerous, and that the wisest policy would be to hoist the flag at once. If these great colonial Imperialists, Sir George Grey and Sir HenriyParkes, had had their way, the British flag might to-day he flying across the Pacific from east to west,, for all these islands might have been ours."
