LOYAL TO THE GOVERNMENT
[Per Press Association.] Pahiatua, June 24
Mr Escott, M.P., delivered a pre sessional address last night, reviewing the legislation of last session. Hr pointed out that the Government had fulfilled its promise regarding the freehold, pensions for widows and vet srans, the destruction of political patronage, and reform of the Legislative Council, though the Bill for the lat ter was rejected by the Upper House Replying to Opposition criticism, M> Escott pointed out that more money had been spent on public works by the Government than authorised, am 1 that the amount had only been exceeded three times during the past fifteen years. Regarding the Customs, ho said the previous Government had always been taking credit for largo sums they had remitted, yet the Opposition critics were now asking for a free breakfast table. Ho condemned short-dated loans as being suicidal to the country. He urged re-forms in the education system, and advocated motor service to the backblooks districts and cheap money for settlers. Ho was accorded a vote of thanks.
