In the match against Philadelphia at the end of the first day’s play, Australia scored 309 for the loss of three wickets, and Philadelphia were all out in the fir£t innings for 123.
ROWING.
HARVARD DEFEATS YALE
New York, June 21
Harvard defeated Yale by eleven lengths. The contest was noteworthy on account of the adoption by the Yale crew of the English stroke. Rowing experts afterwards attributed their defeat to the use of this stroke. Men, they say, are not fitted to use it unless they first underwent a long and gruelling course of training extending over at least four years. The Americans are not likely to generally adopt 'the stroke.

In the continuation of the Davis Cup round between Canada and South Africa, Powell and Schwengers (Canada) defeated Gauntlet and Lesueur (South Africa) 7—5, 6—3, 3—6.
London, June 22
Canada defeated South Africa in the singles, Schwengers beating Lesueur, 6_3, 6—3, 6—3.
