NATIONAL BANK OF NEW ZEA-
LAND,
13 PER CENT. DIVIDEND

The general manager of the National Bank pf New Zealand, Ltd., has received a cable message from their London Board advising the declaration of a dividend of 6 per cent, for the half year, and a bonus to shareholders of one per cent, on the paid-up capital of £500,000, equalling 13 per cent, in all for, the year ended 31st March last. A sum of £20,000 has been added fo the Reserve Fund which will then stand at £520,000, and £15,000 has been added to the reserve foi depreciation of investments and £36,750 Has been carried forward. The directors have further allocated £15,000 in reduction of the bank premises account, and £4OOO to the officers’ pension fund. The annual meeting of the bank will be held in London on the Ist July.
MAORIS AND CHARITABLE AID
Wellington, June 19
During the reading of the report of the Charitable Aid Committee at yesterday’s meeting of the Wellington Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, Dr. McKenzie protested against the Maoris receiving charitable aid. It was, ho contended, not only wrong to the .people who were contributors, but was wrong to the ' Maori race. They were not a subject race. They were provided for by’ the Government, and had a special fund set aside for them, and it was not fair that they should receive, charitable aid. The .Chairman (Rev. W. A. Evans) said that the Superintendent of Charitable Aid had communicated with the Government in regard to the matter, but had received no satisfaction. He inI tended, however, to again approach the Government. A PECULIAR CASE. Gisborne, June 19. An interesting case was heard at the Magistrate’s Court to-day, before Mr W. A. Barton, S.M., in which Mary Mackenzie, of Otoko; and G. J. A. Johnston,' 'clerk' of the Magistrate’s Court, prodeeded against A'. Herbert Hallen, of Clevedon, medical practitioner, and i; H. J.
