COLLECTING A DEBT. [Per Press Association.] Hastings, June 4. John Ellis Smith, a middle-aged man, was committed for trial to-day on a charge of attempting to discharge a weapon loaded with destructive material at Francis Henry Bloxsome. Evidence for the prosecution alleged that Smith went to Bloxsome’s house on May 24, and asked for £l, which he maintained was owing to him. Bloxsome refusing, the accused drew a revolver which ho pointed at the prosecutor, saying “If this won’t do, this (producing a sheath knife) will.” Bloxsome closed with Smith, whom he held till the arrival of the police. The revolver was found to be loaded in four chambers. The accussed reserved his defence, bail being refused.

POACHING GAME. Christchurch, June 4. This season is a closed one in Canterbury for imported and native game, and five men were charged at the Police Court this morning with failing to preserve this protection by taking native game. The defendants were Davis Hunter, Walter H. Overton, Arthur M. Loasby, Percy C. Loasby, and Thomas Davidson. The cases against Hunter and Overton were dismissed. The Bench inflicted a fine of £3 and coats on each of the, other three defendants.
