BUTTER AND CHEESE.

MR J. ALLEN’S REPORT. ■v ; _ [Per Press Association.] Auckland, June 4. In an interview at Auckland yesterday, the Hon. Jas. Allen, Minister of Finance, expressed rOgret that some of the cliefese from 'New Zealand was not arriving in first-class condition in Ldndoii;and that there were also complaints about the quality of New Zealand?' butter. These faqts have been wOlt ’ known to ’those engaged in, the dairy produce export trade, but •are perhaps not- generally known. A ■reporter who hi ad o some inquiries locally to-day was informed; that, th e Complaints ; regarding shijiment ( s of 'New 'chedse had been frequent.'- ’AI a'matter Of faqt, some of r the chrfCse l exported did not grade as first-class when shipped. It was, in the opinion of the gentleman interviewed, a great mistake for second-rclSß/-cheesel-to 'bd''Exported. New Zealand cheese had obtained a good reputation on the London market, and it -was •li'fCldy' important'that thatr.e•fftftatidn oil the London markethrdl. r sutatibn l should be maintained. The htntterTbifld' be'Vemedied, for to some extent it was due to faults in the -manufacture. The first lot.shipped might be second-grade, but there was time to remedy matters before more was .shipped. The changeable weather experienced, and the dt’ought in the North Island were largely responsible—for the inferior quality of the olieeso’’exported, and faulty manufacture had something to do with it. As to the New Zealand butter sent Home, the complaints were not so serious, and some of the North Island butter had been very favorably commented on.
