DETAILS OF THE DISASTER. THE INCA’S BOWS STOVE. [By Electric Telegraph—Copyright] [United Press Association.] London, May 28. The Inca, which collided with the Tainui, was bound from Newcastle for Marseilles. She has arrived at Vigo, with her bows stove in and her forepeak flooded.
“A PEG ATT A PROCESSION.” The pumps are working in the Tainui’ s No. 1 hold. The cargo in No. 2 hold is washing about. The captain proposes to stop the leaks and proceed to the Thames. The passengers landed at Plymouth describe the transfer to the Garth Castle as like a regatta procession. The sea was smooth, and all the boats were lashed together to avoid being lost in the fog. The women and children were first placed in the Tainui’s boats, then married men, and finally the single men. The Garth Castle was a quarter of a mile distant, and the fog continued till the arrival oft the Lizards. • REPAIRING AT CORUNNA. JETTISONING MEAT FROM NO 1 HOLD.
NO 2 NOT FLOODED. (Received 9.25 a.m.) London, May 28. . The Tainui has a hole three feet by two feet, being temporarily repaired at Corunna. All the meat in No. 1 hold is bad, and will probably be jettisoned. No. 2 hold was not flooded. after the collision. The passengers were not informed of the seriousness of the collision till the evening. The vessel’s bows sank till walking the deck was like climbing a hill. The passengers were advised to retire, and the majority did so, but were awakened at two o’clock in the morning, when life belts were served out. AN ANXIOUS TIME. The steamer Garth Castle, with the Tainui’s passengers ‘aboard, twice narrowly escaped Collisions with tramps while proceeding up the, Channel in' the fog. Captain Cruise did not leave the bridge for three days and nights. }
