BOXING. BURNS AND PELKY COMMITTED. [By Electric Telegraph—'Copyright] [United Press Association.] Ottawa, May 28. The magistrate at Calgary committed Tommy Burns and Pelky on a charge of the manslaughter of McCarthy, ignoring the Coroner’s verdict. Accused were admitted to bail. The police deny that the fight was unlawful or a prize fight such as the Canadian law prohibited. A full investigation into the death is, however, necessary. ATHLETICS. (Received 9.5 a.m.) Sydney, May 28. Tiie inter-University Athletic Championships were won by Melbourne with 1.3 J points, Sydney being second with points, and Adelaide third with five points. GOLF, THE BRITISH CHAMPIONSHIP. London, May 28. A feature of the golf championship contest at Saint Andrews’ was Black well’s and Abe Mitchell’s long driving. Blackwell won by four up and two to play. Michael Scott won his third round. (Received 8 a.m.) London, May 28. Michael Scott was disqualified for arriving ten minutes late at the begianing of the third round of the golf d.ampionship.
LAWN TENNIS. THE AUSTRALIANS IN AMERICA. New York, May 28. \ Boost and Rice defeated Miles and Davuev at Boston, 6—4, 6 1. The Australians played a steady game, covering a lot of ground and returning seemingly impossible shots. The steadiness of the back court shots dimmed the brilliancy of the Americans’ play at the nets. FOOTBALL. THE MAORI TEAM. [Per Press Association.] Rotorua, May 28. The Maori touring team defeated Rotorua by 17 points to 9. In the first spell the game was 6 all, but in the second, the Maoris, although not playing as well as tne Rotorua backs, showed better forward combination. The team promises to he strong witl practice. THE RUGBY UNION. Wellington, May 28. Th o Management Committee of the New Zealand Rugby Union met tonight. Tho Otago Union wrote, accepting September 13 as a date for the New Zealand-Australia match. Ml i E.
