The Ministers of War and Marine in .the Senate, warned officers not to join secret societies. Both utterances are applauded by the press, which calls on the officers belonging to the Freemasons to withdraw.
BLUEJACKETS SENTENCED. Malta, May 24. Payne and Woodcock have been found guilty of involuntary homicide and sentenced to 21 months’ imprisonment each. A cablegram, from Malta dated February 24, stated; —A statement made by Maltese boatmen resulted*in the arrest of Bluejackets Payne and Woodcock, belonging to the cruiser Royal Arthur, on a > charge -of throwing Artilleryman Honrigan overboard, he being drowned. The' bluejackets admit that there was a quarrel, but state that Hourigan, who was drunk, fell overboard. FATAL EXPLOSION. -,j , ; M “TT I - BUenos Ayres, May 24. • By an explosion of gas in the harbor hydraulic works twelve men were killed and twenty injured. TRIBAL FIGHTING. (Received 9.5 a.m.) Delhi, May 25. Severe intertribal fighting is taking place on the Swat frontier. The Newagis expelled the pro-British chief Khan and invited Ranumara Khan,the stormy petrel of the.Chitral campaign, to accept the Khanship. \ SAFETY REGULATIONS. London, May 25. The Board of Trade will issue minute regulations for the mustering of crews and passengers whenever boats are lowered at sea. BOMB IN INSURANCE OFFICE.
A clockwork bomb was found in the Atlas Insurance Company’s office at Dublin. ARMED MERCHANTMEN. Five of the Houlder Company’s liners and the'River Plate Meat Company’s liners have been armed with two 4.7 quick-firers. THE INSURANCE ACT. Mrs Doglycarte’s estate has been sworn at £117,670. Testatrix bequeathed £SOOO each to her brothers in Adelaide and John Alfred Black or widows, also legacies to a number of those connected with the Savoy Opera, Company.
