H.M.S. NEW ZEALAND.

DEPARTURE FROM CHRISTCHURCH. Christchurch, May 23.

The battle cruiser New Zealand left Lyttelton for Akaroa this morning. Captain Halsey sent the following farewell message to the people of Canterbury: “On leaving Lyttelton harbor, which we do with feelings of deepest regret, 1 wish to express how sincerely grateful all on board are for the truly hospitable and wholehearted way in which we have been received by the whole community of Canterbury, which reception can never be forgotten by any of us. H.M.S. New Zealand bids farewell and all on board trust it is but an au revoir. —Lionel Halsey.” BIG GUN PRIZES “OFF.” The proposal inaugurated here to establish a Dominion fund to provide a substantial prize for big gun shooting on the New Zealand has so far fallen flat; in fact it never got going. Not one subscription was received. The Mayor, who had the matter in hand, was naturally much disappointed. “Not a single subscription has been received,” he stated to a reporter to-day. All local bodies were communicated with, but those that replied said that they had already done their share in making grants for tjie entertainment of the officers and men, and they could not do any more. The fund was to he a Dominion .fund, and in no sense was to be regarded as a Christchurch fund. It was proposed to raise £IOOO throughout the Dominion, and the income from. the amount raised would provide £SO or £6O, which, according to Captain Halsey, would be ample for big gun work, It should be a most easy matter for the Dominion to raise £1000.”
