FOOTBALL.
THE SENIOR GRADES. CLIFTON v. ELTHAM. Clifton and Eltham met at Waitara yesterday t.'ie former winning by 12 points to nil. Eltham forwards did fairly well, but back play was weak. At half-time the scores stood: Clifton 3, Eltham nil, the winners adding 9 points ia the second half. Jones Thomas, V. Tate and Kujie obtained tries,, none of which were converted. Mr F. Spurdle was referee.
TUKAPA v. STRATFORD. Tukapa put up a score of 14 points against Stratford’s 6 at New Plymouth yesterday afternoon, and though the game was expected to be a close one, the big score made by Tukapa came as a surprise. As usual Stohr’s splendid kicking had a lot to do with the victory. The first half was in favor of Tukapa, whose forwards were dangerous in the loose, and whose backs kicked well and handled the ball in good style. Stratford opened up with a good forward passing rush, but soon settled down into indifferent play. The second spell was more even, and towards the end Stratford played a really good game, and gave their opponents all their work to keep up a defence. It was, however, too late to avert defeat. The first try for the northerners was gained by Loveridge, Stohr converting. The latter player shortly afterwards kicked a wonderful goal from half-way, and when the first spell ended the score stood B—o. Cade got over the line shortly after resuming, but Stohr did not add to the points with his kick. Ward again got over for Tukapa, Stohr for the second time failing to convert. With 14 points against them Stratford really woke, and' after some pretty Wofk, Tocker scored, but Dobson was unable to increase the pointo, and a little later Stewart scored cleverly also. Dobson just missed the goal. No further score resulted, Tukapa winning by 8 points. Mr Roche was referee.
FIRST JUNIORS. STRATFORD (11) v. TUKAPA (3). Stratford and Tukapa had an interesting game on the Show Ground. Tukapa “set the hall rolling, and, within • two minutes of the kick-off, West landed a goal'from a place kick. Stratford then commenced to assert themselves, and at half-time were level, Brown having scored. In the second spell, they had generally the best of things, although many scoring chances were lost by Stewart and Tichbon. The referees would not have injured the game by being less strict on very slight infringements. the frequency of. tbs
whistle tending to make the game slow. Watkins and Kennedy scored, and Collins converted the latter’ try. STAR (5) v. ELTHAM (3). As th© scores indicate, this was a fairly even game. Shortly before half-time, Plunket score for Star, McGahey converting. The Eltham score was got early in the second spell, Loveridge landing a nice goal from a, penalty. PRIMARY SCHOOL FIXTURES. Stratford were, at home to Eltham in the cup match at \ ictoria Park yesterday, and retired winners by 4 goals to nil.' Stratford won the toss and set the visitors to play against the sun. Play was quiet for the first few minutes until Cyril Carncross broke clean away and looked a scorer, when he was pulled up by .Smith. Stratford noy began to settle down, and a pretty piece of work between McGlade and Anderson ended in the latter opening the score for Stratford. The home team now encouraged, gradually assumed the upper hand, and Schofield added number two with a good shot which the goalkeeper had no chance of saving. The same player also put on a third goal from a good pass by A. Gorton, and half-time arrived with the score standing, Stratford 3, Eltham nil. In the first minute of the restart, Anderson raced away and centered accurately to A. Gorton, who was well up, and the latter had no difficulty in making the score 4 nil. Stratford eased up after this, and Eltham began to press, a shot by J. Smart just going wide. The visitors who were now playing much better forced three corners in succession, but could not get the ball between the posts, and Stratford ran out winners as stated above.
A regrettable incident occurred five minutes from the close, Turkington (Eltham) being sent off the field through arguing with the referee, Mr S. Clark< V HAWERA (2) v. OKaIAWA (0).
