A CHARGE OF ARSON. Nelson, May 22. On the 7th inst. a cottage at Stoke, owned by William Best and occupied by a young man named Herbert Whitford, was destroyed by fire. The building was not insured, but Whitford had a policy in the United office on his effects-—£4o on furniture, etc., and £35 on a motor bicycle, which was destroyed. The circumstances of the fire were considered such as to warrant an enquiry, which concluded to-dav, when the coroner found that the cottage had been wilfully set on fire by Whitford. Whitford was arrested on a charge of arson and remanded until Friday, bail being allowed.
