LAND FOR SETTLEMENT. [Per Press Association.] Wellington, May 14. The Government has acquired Know--4y Park estate of 4933 acres, situated seven miles from Mataura. Tins .vill be cut up into moderate sized nixed farms.

The Government has also completed the purchase of Waiarikiki estate if 4133 acres, eight miles from Maf.aura and Pukerau railway station, suitable for subdivision into moderate ized farms. Dairying can be profitably carried on over a considerable portion of the area. CHRISTCHURCH SESSIONS. Christchurch, May 14. At the Supreme Court, Thomas Stirling, who was yesterday found guilty (with strong recommendation to mercy) of theft,of nets, was orderid to come up for sentence when" callid upon, and to pay £5 towards the cost of the prosecution. Albert Claxton, found guilty of attempting to break and enter was admitted to probation for twelve months, and ordered to pay £3 towards the cost of prosecution. Arthur Wm. Rait was found guilty of perjury, but sentence was deferred. John Burrage, found guilty of indecent assault, received the maximum penalty of five years’ imprisonment. The Crown entered a stay of proceedings in the second charge, that of attempted unnatural offence. DOMESTIC SERVANTS. Wellington, May 14. Seventy-six servants who were on V.the Athenic, which arrived this morning from London, were met by Miss McLean, of the Immigration Department, who supplied them with all necessary information. Twenty-six are for Wellington, thirteen for Auckland, and eleven for Christchurch. During the voyage, two deatlis occurred. Mrs Lazelle, aged 22 years, died on April 23, and Charles Brown, aged 44 years, died at Hobart. Mrs Lazelle’s mother and Brown’s wife were passengers on the steamer.
