The Admiralty lias sent the cruiser to investigate, hut there are no details. Twenty-five mhillion of the Chinese loan will be issued on tho 21st inst., whereof £7,500,000 will bo issued in London. The Church Imperial Club is being influentially established at Westminster, with a membership comprising the Anglican bishops and clergy throughout the world, as well as church officers and workers. Bradford woollen r firms declare that peace is the only factor needed to complete the soundness of the situation, and to prevent a possible fall in values. Peace will stimulate the Continental demand for wool. Similar opinions are expressed throughout the country.
The Oceanic Steam Navigation Company’s profits for the year were £385,515., after writing off £189,158 for the loss of the Titanic. No dividend was declared, apart from tho interim dividend paid in March, 1912. The sum of £IOO,OOO was transferred to the insurance fund, and £60,515 was carried forward. In addition to the loss of the Titanic and tho OOlympic collision, the dock strikes were costly tc the Australian and New Zealand services.
. The Telegraph states that twentyone American battleships will shortly be partaking in a Mediterranean cruise. The ships will total 365,00 C tons.
The Morning Post states that it is hoped the principal liners to Australia, Canada, and South Africa will shortly be armed, the Admiralty pro viding guns and possibly a hundred rounds per ship. The gun crew will mostly be naval reservists. The Admiralty will pay tho gun" crews ai extra threepence per day, and the gun layers ninepence. Naval reservists at the terminal ports will be responsible for the training of the crews. * Washington,'May 14.
The Navy Department has issued a statement regarding the loss of uncompleted plans of the electric .wiring of the new battleship Pennsyl vania during the celebrations of the Presidential inauguration. The officers declare the plans are valueless,, but are alarmed because similar thftse have been frequent recently. New York, May 14.
Jack Johnson was tried at Chicago for violation of the Mann law, and found guilty on all counts. The jurj consulted for an hour. Sentence was deferred. An appeal is probable. Paris, May 14.
The inhabitants, are abandoning the town of Tormery, Savoy, owing to tin approaching blasting of the so-called Rock of Damocles, which is poisec 2700 feet above and measuring 2600 cubic yards. .Thirty workmen for the past four months have been drilling dynamite holes in the rock. The an thorities' have voted £40,000 to pro vide for homes destroyed. . ' Renewed attempts have been mad' to wreck the Erie trains at Patersons New Jersey. Detectives are riding or every locomotive. An attempt tc blow up with dynamite a magazine was made, but the concrete walls frustrated the marauders.’ The labour conditions are serious. /
