«*5 OLD WOMAN’S DEATH. [Per Press Association.] Christchurch, May 13. Anna West, 72, died at the hospital as the result of wounds which it is believed, were self-inflicted. She resided with her son at St. Albans. SUDDEN DEATH. Hastings, May 13. Louis De Pelichet, of the firm of Do Pelichet, McLeod and Co., was found dead in his bedroom at the Pacific Hotel this morning. Deceased was in a sitting position on the bed and half undressed, apparently having expired when removing his clothes last evening. He was suffering from heart trouble. He was 61 years of ago and unmarried. FELL OFF A WAGGON. Blenheim, May 13. On Saturday a waggon loaded with coal and stores was travelling from Pen wick to Glengyle, and when at Wairau Valley, Michael Hunter and Arthur Reay jumped in the waggon and lay on the top of the load. It is alleged they were under the influence of liquor. After going ten miles, Hunter was missed, but the waggoner continued his journey. Next morning a search was made /for Hunter, and he was found five miles back on the track dead. It is supposed he had fallen off the waggon. At the Inquest a verdict of death liom exposure accelerated by his alcoholic condition was returned. A sensational incident occurred in Auckland on Friday afternoon, when •x pony and gig belonging to Mr J. E. Wheeler dashed down the Railway wharf and disappeared into the harbour. The horse, which appears to have taken fright in Quay Street, bolted in the direction of the Railway wharf, and, tnrnging on to the wharf, continued its career down the western side until it went over into the water. The horse and gig sank immediately, the animal being drowned. An effort wafi made to recover the pony and gig with grappling irons, but without success. This morning the services of a diver wore requisitioned, and, after being located by him, the horse and gig were lifted out of the water. The pony was a valuable one, and Mr Wheeler estimates his loss at over £IOO.
