FOOTBALL.

Not a little amusement was imparted into a discussion at the annual meeting of the New Zealand Rugby Union concerning the location of the star attraction Of the year, the North v. South Island match, says the correspondent of the Otago Daily dimes. Mr W. Perry, the treasurer of the Wellington Rugby Union, was acting as delegate for the West Coast Union, in loyalty to the trust reposed in him, moved that it he allotted to Greymoutli, and pointed out that when the English team played at Greymoutli £4OO was taken at the gate. Other delegates urged that the match should he played at Wellington, as it was the best location from every point of view. Then the laughter started. It is well known that the Wellington Union is not in the best financial position possible, but the outlook is hopeful, and Wellington has no desire to have its regular club and interprovincial fixtures interfered with by the regular North v. South battle. When the tide seemed to be running in favour of Wellington for the match Mr Perry rose and said, “For goodness sake, don’t give it to us. We don’t want it,” and Mr E. G. Hales ended the argument by informing the delegates that the Wellington Union had decided to support Canterbury iu a request that the match should be played at Christchurch,

A subsequent motion by Mr J. lleid that the match be played in New Plymouth was lost on the voices, and Christchurch was finally chosen for the match.

A sub-union to embrace the Patea and Waverley districts has been formed, with the following office bearers : President, Mr E. P. Symes; secretary and treasurer, Mr P. Hunter; management committee (with power to add one member from Waitotara, or Mou-mahaki-Ngutuwera), Messrs R. Hamerton, Fowler, P. Palmer and A. Manners; hon. auditor, Mr H. W. James.

Mr W. Ogior, President of the Inglewood Football Club has written as follows to the Secretary of the Taranaki Rugby Union: “I notice that the Rugby Union passed a vote of thanks f for the Pitman Cup for the Taranaki schools championship. This cup was donated by Mr Pitman at the annual meeting of the club, and it was left* entirely to me to decide what to do with it. In consultation with my com mittee, we decided to endeavour ti work a competition amongst the schools in the Inglewood football district, but no response was received from any of the schools, except one. ft has now been decided to use this cup for competition amongst teams from different parts of our football district, and to play games on Thursdays, so that our town will have some Thursday football ;and it is almost certain that we cannot raise first and sec ond juniors. You will please contradict the statement that this cup has been donated for the Taranaki schools competition.”
