The Duchess of Connaught passed a j good night, states a London cable- j gram. I The Rev. G. H. Balfour, of First ! Church, Dunedin, has been elected j Moderator of the Dunedin Presby- j tery. Mr G. N. Curtis was yesterd ly re-elected Chairman of the Stratford | Domain Bead for the ensuing year. Mr G. Hunter was re-elected secretary. Mr William Malone,” a Crimean veteran, aged 79, died at the Waikato Hospital on Monday night. He had the Crimean medal with three clasps —lnkerman, Sebastopol, and Balaclava —also the Egyptian and New Zealand war medals.. Tho Hon. W. Fraser, forty-three years ago made his first visit to Greymouth —landing and leaving the same day. About 12 years ago ho made a second trip as member of the Midland Railway Commission, while his third trip was mado last week to inspect tho State Coal Mines.
Mrs Scott, the aged mother of tho Antarctic hero, has written a letter to the magazine published at May bury School,' where Captain Scott’s early education was imparted. She says:— “My dear son and I were always groat friends, and advise all boys with mothers to be the same. They will find that it brings happiness.”
Dr. Chapman, with Mrs Chapman, Mr and Mrs Alexander, Mr and Mrs Norton, and Mr Dennieton, leave by the Niagara to-day. The mission party will re-asseipble in Glasgow for the campaign in Scotland. Dr. Chapman will go to New York and rest, but Mr Alexander will probably attend the Convention in Zurich. The Rev. Davis, with his mother, leaves foi Zurich next week.
“Professor” Stagfmole, the wellknown boxing instuctor, is at present in Dune’din. Writing of his visit, the Otago Daily Times says: Professor Stagpoole has taught with a greaf amount of success and there are many men in the dominion as well as out of it to-day, who have proved themselves to be clever and skilful boxers, and who owe their ability to the careful instruction received from this erstwhile knight of the roped arena.
General Sir lan Hamilton,, Inspec-tor-General of the Oversea Forces, will leave the Mediterranean and visit New Zealand and Australia in January, 1914. He is coming out at the invitation of. the Governments of these countries for the express purpose, of inspecting the military forces. During the summer of the present year, General i Hamilton will go to Canada, at the invitation of the Dominion Government, to inspect the Canadian military forces.
The new Defence staff at Hawera after the transfer of headquarters will be as follows: —Captain Stevem officer in charge of area group '8 (Taranaki) and adjutant for Senior Cadets in gropp No. 8; Lieut. McDonnell, Adjutant 11th Regiment Taranaki Rifles; Regimental Sergeantmajor M‘Glade; Q.M.S. Collins, lltl Regiment Taranaki Rifles; Regimental Sergeant Major Dunham; Q.M.S Dallinger, Senior Cadets in Taranaki Area Sergeant-Major Maloney, ir charge 81 area.
