A SUDDEN DEATH

[Per Press Association.] Palmerston N., May 7

A well-dressed man, about thirtythree years of age, with auburn hair, whoso pockets contained documents bearing the name of W. Temperly and a railway ticket from Hawera to Hastings, sat down in the Westport Coal Company’s yard, near Palmerston North Station this afternoon, and died. One of the employees went up and spoke to him, and found him dead. The cause was apparently heart disease.

FOUND DROWNED

Invercargill, May 7

Patrick Kennedy, a miner, aged 73, and single, was discovered in the Mat,aura river on Sunday by Constable Henderson, of Lumsden. Kennedy, who lived in a but about two miles from Athol, had been missing since Friday, and it is thought that he was drowned while attempting to ford the river. The body was removed to Garston, where an inquest was held, and a verdict returned to the effect that deceased’s death was caused by shock, while trying to cross the Mataura river.

(From the Patea Press)

On Tuesday morning the infant son of Mr J. Blendon, of Tutumatahi, was the victim of a painful accident, by which the little finger of the left hand was lost. Mr Blendon was engaged in cutting up a sheep, and in doing so put his sharp butchers’ knife on one side. Here it was discovered by his three year old daughter who commenced chopping the edge of the block. Her brother placed his hand over the side, and before Mr Blendon could prevent an accident, the knife came down, with the result stated. The boy was driven in a distance of 27 miles to Waverley, where Dr. Harvey took charge. The patient, who is a fine sturdy little chap, bore up very well under the strain, and is now pro-

gressing favourably. A man named John Richardson, a resident of Waitotara, was brought into Waverley on Tuesday suffering from a severely crushed foot. It appears that Richardson was engaged in moving some logs when the accident happened. Dr. Harvey attended to the sufferer, who left for home shortly afterwards.
