A motor car, while returning from Evesham to Coventry, in England, struck a fallen tree, leaped it, and landed in a ditch on the other side with only a twisted front axle as the only damage. Two men in'the car escaped with a few bruises. The fallen tree formed an obstruction 2oin high.

The Invercargill Borough Council has adopted a by-law for the regulation of street traffic, but before any prosecutions are carried into effect the public will be given at least a fortnight’s instructions with regard to what really constitutes “the rule of the road.”

A man named Jean Co bier, living in Cherbourg, the French port, has just awakened in hospital after sleeping for 77 days. Fie was extremely surprised to find a number of doctors at his bedside, and had no idea that he had been asleep more than a few hours. He is in excellent health.

A suggestion has been made to the Mayor of Auckland (Mr C. J. Parr) that a model of the Panama Canal on a large scale would prove an attractive and instructive exhibit for the forthcoming Auckland Exhibition, in view of the fact that a proposed canal to link up the Manakau and Waitemata Harbours has loomed largely in the public eye of late. The Mayor considers the suggestion an excellent one, and has passed it on to Mr Elliot, president of the exhibition executive.

Judicial separations were strongly condemned by a speaker at the meetof Women and Children in Auckland. The present system of separation was, he held, much worse than actual divorce. “If the husband so much as approaches the wife after a separation order has been issued he is liable to be fined,” declared the speaker, “so he naturally keeps away from her. Divorced peopc are often reconciled,* but it is quite a rare occasion if two people ever come together again after a judicial separation.

It was not only the shipping that sought shelter from the gale on Thursday night. A large albatross, about 10 feet from one wing-tip to the other, after braving the elements for some time in the Straits, gave up in disgust and came ashore at Island Bay, in a setion next to the house of Mr H. G. Hill. Mr Hill captured the bird and intends to present it to the Wellington Zoo.

The world’s highest waterfall, which makes Niagara look like a tiny stream, was described by Hr. Percy Randall in a lecture at the West Indian Committee Rooms, London, last month. This is Kaiteur, or “Old Man’s Fall,” on the Potaro River, in British Guiana. It is 822 feet high, or about five times as high as Niagara. Its name is desived from the fact that the natives, when their men became too old to work, set them adrift above the falls.

A terrifying experience, which caused the death of an old woman, befel the parents and friends who were, taking part in a funeral ceremony of a baby at Butte, California, last month. A funeral service was being held over the body .of the three-year-old son of Mrs -I. Burney, and the mourners were kneeling round the tiny coffin, the lid of which had not yet been screwed down, when there was a movement and the body rose into a sitting position. The wideopen eyes of the child gazed straight into those of his grandmother, Mrs L. Smith, who was 81 years old. The shock was too great for the old woman, and she dropped back, dead. The terrified mourners could not move for several seconds. Then the child sank into the coffin again, unconscious. A doctor was called, but the child (k i within an hour.
