RESISTING THE POLICE
[Per Press Association.] Greymouth, April 22. Two brothers named Roberts and James Steele, were lined £3 each on the evidence of Constable Catw°H at the Magistrate’s Court on Monday for using obscene language at Otira. The sequel occurred the same afternoon. A constable was to Greymouth station when the brothers accosted him, knocking him down and brutally assaulting him. At the Court to-day both were sentenced to one month’s imprisonment with hard labor. Another brother, named Hugh, was lined £5 for inciting his brothers to resist, and for himself obstructing the police at the same occurrence. THE SUGAR TRUST CASES. Wellington, April 23. In the Sugar Trust case, Mr xuchmond finished Jus argument during the forenoon, and was followed by Mi' Myers for Levin and Co. Argument is still proceeding. THE TALISMAN MINE MISHAP.
Waihi, April 23. Evidence in connection with the coroner’s enquiry into the Talisman Mine fatality at Karangaliake on 28th March last, by which Mcßride and Hyde were killed, was concluded last night. A verdict was returned that the accident was caused through the breaking of a wire rope, which had become deteriorated, but evidence was not sufficient to show negligence. A rider was added that such ropes be tested every three months.
