The Federal State election campaigns are in full swing, and are being conducted with great vigor. The Federal Government’s referenda proposals are meeting with strong opposition. Before the Empire Commission, Mr Paxton, ex-president of the Chamber of Commerce, urged that cheap weekend cables be extended. Code messages at present were only used for social purposes. If the extension were granted it would be largely availed of by merchants. Broadly speaking, cheapness of cables was of more benefit to the community than increasing the speed of steamers. Ex-Senator Pulsford expressed a similar opinion.
