Most of the mail matter which was destroyed by the fire in the Makura’s mail room consisted of newspapers for all parts of New Zealand. Twenty bags were destroyed. The others, which were damaged by water, were dried in the engine room, and the contents will he sorted at 'Auckland and distributed later. It will be weeks, and in some cases months, before the senders of the destroyed letters and papers can know the extent of their loss.

THE MACEDONIA’S EXPERIENCES. The Macedonia arrived at daybreak. She left Sydney on Monday night and met squally weather with heavy seas. The vessel entered a cyclone moving south-east, and was hove-to on Monday night and resumed at 5 o’clock on Tuesday morning. While hoveto at midday a heavy sea came aboard while the vessel was in the trough of the sea, and then a great wave came over the how and swept the whole vessel and the captain’s bridge, and sent her stern under. The water broke the stern telegraph, bent the two electric cranes like lead-piping, broke the hurricane dock, and caused minor damage. No person was inj u red.
