BABY'S HEAD ALMOST SEVERED.

MOTHER MURDERS HER CHILD

Wellington (N.S.W.), Mar. 31

. A tragedy occurred in Jean" .street, Wellington, on'.Sunday morning, as a result or which a child named Bertha Gooley, 19 months old, lost its life, and" its mother Sarah Gooley, is now an inmate of the hospital, with severe injuries to her throat.

The first intimation that anything untoward had happened was at 3.30 a.m. The husband of Sarah Gooley, • who occupied another room, was awakened by the unfortunate woman and told to look to the child. At this time her own throat had been cut, and was bleeding profusely. On entering his wife's room, the husband was horrified to find the youngest child lying on the bed, with its throat cut from ear to ear, the head being almost severed. The police were called, and on arrival discovered a blood-stained razor, with which, apparently, the injuries had been inflicted. In the same room were three other children, two of whom were sleeping in, the same bed as the infant who was killed. The little one was regarded as the favourite of the household.

The woman's injuries are not likely ;o prove fatal.
