AN EXHIBITION COURT.

FOB TARANAKI COUNTY. The question of the proposed Taranaki Court at the Auckland Exhibition was considered at yesterday’s meeting of the Taranaki County Council. The Herald states that the dhairman (Mr J. Brown) reported having attended the preliminary meeting held at Stratford on March 4, and said the scheme was only in its first stages, and all depended on whether the local bodies gave it their support or not, if it would be brought to fruition. The circular from the secretary (Mr J. B. Richards) was read, in which the council’s subscription, based on a contribution ,of £35 oil each milJioUj pounds of capital value of the rateable property was shown at £7p. In. the 1 general' discussion which followed the opinion was expressed that jqountids were being mote heavily .taxed thaii towns, while the towns were more thickly populated and would benefit more from the exhibition. It was generally admitted that it would be foolish policy to make anything but a really good showing, but the condition of the council’s overdraft, had to be considered, and £7O -was a big sum to vote' for such an object. The sum of £25 was the council’s share towards the. cost of the court at the Christchurch Exhibition some years ago, but the council > was of one mind that unless something infinitely better than the ing made there was done at Auckland, showing made there it would be better not to do anything at all. After some discussion it was unanimously decided, on Councillor M'Allum’s motion, to agree to the contribution as suggested by the committee provided that all the other local bodies in the province agree to pay their quota.
