AN AMERICAN BETTING DECISION.
[By Electric Telegraph—Copyright] [United Press Association.] (Received 8.50 a.in.) London, April 7.
The Daily Chronicle anticipates the return of American horses from France and England owing to the decision by the Supreme Court of New York State in allowing oral betting where no money passed. It is anticipated that the system of credit betting will be established. RACING- CLUB’S PERMITS.
At Patea yesterday a deputation waited upon the Premier with a view to restoring the totalisator permit for the local racing club. Mr Massey, in reply, said he wanted to express his own opinion, and that was, that so far as racing in this country was concerned the laws were in a very unsatisfactory condition. Under previous legislation bookmakers were legalised, and the Act in question was carried by one vote only. After the evil of this system had been discovered, Parliament went to the other extreme. He might say that his sympathies were with the little clubs who were kept alive for sport arid sport alone and not for gambling. He could say this, that Parliament would be given an opportunity of expressing an opinion on the matter referred to by the deputation. Of course one member of the Government could not commit the rest. The question in reality belonged to the Minister of Internal Affairs, who w r as in the far North at the present time, but the deputation could rest assured he would ; do what he could in the matter.
