A PECULIAR FATALITY

An inquest was held before Mr G. Cruickshank, coroner, at Nightcaps, touching the death of James Hewitt, a miner, who was killed there on April 2nd. Evidence was given by Archibald Dixon, deputy-mine manager, ■ c<) the effect that he drew Hewitt’s attention to the fact that lie was during his face top high. Hewitt disputed this, and they both went into the driver-to inquire into the matter. The shot went off’ and Hewitt was killed instantaneously. The theory advanced was that Hewitt, who was an experienced miner, had during the argument forgotten about the charge, the fuse of which he had himself lit. A verdict of accidentally killed, through' inadvertently approaching a live shot, was returned. A FATAL TRAP ACCIDENT. Dunedin, April 6.

Charles Edwin King, aged 28, was killed at Purakanui last night. He wds with- seme companions in a trap, when the horse hacked, and tire wheel coming on a stone, the trap was upset over an embankment, turning over thrice in the descent until stopped by a fence. King fell under the cart and received injuries, that caused his immediate death.- His - companion was unconscious for a time. They were proceeding to Purakanui to spend the week end at a camp. At the inquest into the death of Percy Dixon, who was employed in the money-order office, by a collision with a motor car when cycling, tiro coroner returned ah open verdict.
