A FIENDISH PLOT.
An extraordinary criminal case, which represents a strange psychological riddle, ended at Berlin on January 30th, when a mechanic named Carl Sfchroedor was charged with inciting to murder and failing to prevent a crime. It appears that Schroeder wanted to get rid of his only brother Paid, in order to get possession of his fsither’B new belongings. Not wishing to commit a crime himself, the prisoner deliberately induced his brother to commit suicide and kill his sweetheart, Hedwig Karl. Karl, told Paul that Hedwig was unfaithful, add Paul, believing this to be true, after many hours’ talk and persuasion, decided to kill the -girl and himself. Kftrl deliberately arranged all the details. He bought the revolver, had hia brother photographed, and arranged for the photograph and a farewell letter to be addressed to hia mother. He saw the couple off at the station arid then went to the mother of the
girl, with whom he found his own and Paul’# mother. These two he told bluntly that it was all over with Paul and Hedwig, and when the terrified wonlon asked for an explanation he showed them, the letter and photo. They rushed off, and finding the two lovers in the Tegel at the spot mentioned, were in time to save them, although both were in a serious condition. Paul was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment for attempting suicide and murder, and while in prison he saw hie brother, who, ho discotered, had told him a falsehood ahont Hedwig. The girl died later from grief and shock, Karl confessed without any sign of remorse, and lias been sentenced to 18 months’ imprisonment.
