A BLOW AT THE TRUSTS.

AMERICAN TARIFF REFORM.

[By Electric Telegraph—Copyright] [United Press Association.] London, April 4. The Chronicle’s Washington correspondent predicts that the Tariff Bill will save the consumers £175,000,000 annually. The loss of revenue will be only £20,000,000, the difference being the profits accruing to the trusts. The measure is the nearest approach to free trade that has been proposed since the eve of the Civil War, when foodstuffs were placed on the free list. As the Senate is vigorously opposed to freeing wool, many anticipate that a compromise will be arrived at by halving the duty.
