EGG LAYING.
EIGHTH EGG-LAYING COMPETITION FOR FOWLS. FINAL RESULTS. Christclmrcli, April 1. The New Zealand Utility Poultry Club’s eighth egg-laying competition for fowls, and third duck tost, terminated yesterday at Papanui. The tests have been most successful. For the fifty-one weeks the 360 fowls recorded 72,322 eggs, and the ducks recorded 12,057 eggs, an average of over 200 eggs per bird, an achievement that has never been made in any competition with a large flock of birds. The honours went to Mr W. A. Nixon’s White Leghorns in the fowl test, and to Mr T. R. Hall’s Indian Runners in the ducks. In laying 1611 eggs in fifty-one weeks Mr Nixon’s birds have established a world’s record, and went through the tests without a d°ath, as also did Mr Hall’s ducks. The feeding was very much the same as in previous tests. There was not a single death in the whole of the competing ducks, and only about o per cent in the fowls. The following are the final returns for the week ending March 31st; —
