PREMIER’S VISIT TO HAWERA.
There appears to have been some misunderstanding (says the Star) in connection with the visit of the Premier to Hawera, with the result that so far nothing has been done in the matter of receiving him. Mr Pearce, M.P., stated last evening, that he had informed the Mayor nearly a fortnight ago of the proposed visit. The Mayor says that it is true Mr Pearce mentioned the matter to him on the train, and that he then suggested a reception and garden party on Saturday afternoon, but that since this he had not been advised of any arrangements. The following telegram was sent by the Mayor to Mr Pearce yesterday:— “G. V. Pearce, Esq., M.P.: Regret have not heard from you re entertainment of Premier in Hawera. I understand he will be your guest. Will you invite him to be present with his party and yourself at dinner by the citizens of Hawera on Saturday night at .6 o’clock, afterwards to receive deputations in Council Chamber? According to the published programme I understand you don’t propose inviting the Premier to the garden party at Hawera, as suggested by me to you and to Mr Wilkinson, but 1 will fall in with whatever you decide, to extend Hawera’s hospitality to the Premier. Awaiting your reply.”—A. W. Gillies, Mayor.
