QUAINT CHINESE APPEAL,
TO QUIT GAMBLING

Wellington,' March 28,
The Acting-Consul for China in New Zealand' has made an appeal to the Chinese resident in New Zealand in regard to gambling. The appeal, which is quaintly worded, emphasises the evils of gambling, particularly pakapoo-playing, and concludes as follows“Be nobler men, and turn your backs on gamblers; be nobler men, and do not seek to make money out of the vices of others- he nobler men, and set an example to those who still have the good fortune to have 1 thenparents alivebe nobler men, and think of your ancestors, and continue to cultivate virtue, which you inherit from them.” FLOODS IN SOUTHLAND. Gore, March 28. It has been raining heavily in this district for the last 24 hours, inches having fallen; The rivers are all in high' flood. At Lumsden, the Oroti river overflowed and entered the town, i The floods is the highest since big flood of 1878. All tourist traffic to the Cold Lakes is cut off. There are three washouts on the railway between Lumsden and Kingston, which will stop all the trains. All sluicing companies will have to stop work, and will he compelled to turn the water out of .the races. Much crop : is still in the paddocks, and the outlook for the farmers is Very serious.
A “BATCH” OF YOUNG MEN.
CHARGED WITH THEFT. Wanganui, March 28. The sequel to the rebent robberies Was provided at the Police Court this morning, when four young men were charged with stealing goods, and were remanded for a week. A quantity of the stolen articles were found in a “batch” where the men were quartered. In one house visited by the thieves, £IOO was locked up in a safe which the robbers unavailingly tried to open. The house'was ocupied by the treasurer of a benefit society, and the money represented the members quarterly subscriptions.
