Mr M. J. Macßeynolds has been appointed first chairman of the Opunake Harbour Board.
Mr R. Lambie, senr., of Pihaxna, hae been nominated by the Government as its appointee to the new Opunake Harbour Board.
Mr J. T. (“Tom”) Gardiner, of Stratford, will figure as “mine host” of the Club Hotel, Waitara, as from the Ist of April.
Mr Joseph McCluggage returned to Stratford last evening after a'trip to the Wellington and Hawke’s Bay districts, greatly improved in health.
Miss Curran Dunne, who was one of the team by which Ireland was represented in a woman’s hockey match against Scotland in February, is the youngest international player in the world. She has the reputation of being also a good cricketer.
Mr William Thorne, Labor member fyt West Ham hn the House of Oom'mons, and a noted Socialist, refused to meet their Majesties, and stated that he does not believe that their visit to Stratford (England) would mitigate the chronic poverty of the borough.
Madame Bernard, of His Majesty’s Pictures, was a passenger by the mail train for 'Wellington this morning and while in the Empire City will inspectt he new, .Edison talking picture apparatus. j j'. ..
Mr and Mrs W. Baker and daughJ ter, and Mr'Wncl jlfs T. G. L. Nichol- ( as and daughter, residents of Hawera, are shortly leaving for England (reports the Star.) The former, expect to leave late in April, and the latter a week or two sooner .
Captain Davis, who is said to he the J only living man to-day who could b claim to have, commanded a party in I the trenches at Sebastopol, and to have served ,pnder General “Stone- [ wall Jackson” is a vice-president of f the Honorary. Territorials in Dunedin. “I do not suppose,” added Mr J. F. M. Fraser, in announcing his election, “that Captain Davis has his equal in the world.” —.(Loud Applause.)
Queen Alexandra is to be the godmother to Lord Knollys’ grandson, the infant born lately to Mr and Mrs Allan Mackenzie. It is well-known that Mrs Mackenzie’s name, “Louvima,”'waj& composed of the first syllables of. the names of Queen Alexandra’s daughters, but a lesser-known fact is that her brother who also had royal godparents, had his name, “Edge,” contrived for him from those of King Edward and King George.
The illness of the Duchess of Connaught had nothing to do with the inclemencies of the Canadian climate. Her Royal Highness has long been in somewhat delicate health. But it is true, however, that Rideau, the official residence of the Governor-General, is neither large nor comfortable enough to suit her, and ..so, in preference, she was nursed at a hospital. Everyone hopes that the Duchess will soon be herself again. Although shy, she is a very pleasant woman, and has made many friends in the adopted country she so greatly prefers to her own Germany.
