WHANGAMOMONA NOTES.
(From our own Correspondent.) The first girder to No. 0 railway bridge was placed in position to-day, and "the work on the last bridge, the 7th, is being pushed on with \:goui ; and we are at hist very near seeing the engine puff into the township.
Mr W. Thomson, of Mangapapa, had to go to Stratford on Tuesday suffering from a had gash in Ins foot. He hurt himself while cutting scrub on bis section.
A party of gentlemen from Hawera are going to spend their Easter holidays on a walking tour from Whangamomona to Ongarue, and will return by way of the Wanganui river. Given fair weather, the trip should prove most enjoyable, as the travellers u ill bo through the pick of the dominion’s scenery, which as yet is not so widely known as it should be. On March 25th the town sections lately surveyed will be offered by public auction under the supervision of the Commissioner of Crown Lands. There will no doubt be plenty of competition for sections in good positions, and for those close to the town block; but it is unlikely that the rest will bring any more than the bare upset price, if, indeed, they find buyers at all.
The contractors for the new Government cottage at Kohuratahi, Messrs Hodder and Lundon, expect to make a start on the building early next week.
Mr and Mrs J. Sanders, of New Plymouth, are paying a holiday visit to relatives at Kohuratahi. Messrs Harre Bros., of Whitianga Valley, had the misfortune to lose their camp by fire last week. Miss M. Wilson has gone to Stratford for a short holiday before going to Auckland on an extended visit.
A meeting of subscribers to the Whanga organ was held on Friday night, Mr P. Long being in the chair. The meeting unanimously decided to hold a concert social during April, and Messrs Long, Mills, and Aylward were empowered to make all arrangements. The intention is to make the entertainment something thoroughly new and hovel, and there is little doubt that the function will be the means of raising the balance of money due on the organ. Whanga will then boast a town organ all its own.
