HOW IT WAS WON
OXFORD’S SPLENDID SPURT
(Received 12.25 p.m.) London, March 13
Cambridge won the toss and choose the Surrey side of the river. The weather was fine, with a light following wind. Smooth water favoured Cambridge, who were quickest away and clear at £ mile they were a length ahead at Hammersmith, and a length and a half at Chiswick. Oxford then spurted, and reduced the gap to half a length at Barnes Bridge. Cambridge maintained the lead till a quarter of a mile from the finish, when Oxford made an effort which will be forever memorable in the annals of boat-racing. The crew, putting an immense amount of power into their work, crept up inch by inch. Cambridge failed to respond to the calls to spurt, but still led to within 150 yards of the finish, when Oxford came up hand over hand and won a magnificent-ly-fought race by three-quarters of a length. Time, 20 minutes 53 seconds.
The Prince of Wales followed the race in the umpire’s launch.
