MOTOR FATALITY.

DEATH OF NEW PLYMOUTH

RESIDENT,

An unfortunate accident happened at Fitzroy yesterday to a motor car with the result that this morning Mr Norman Bewley died in the New Plymouth Hospital.

It appears that a party of four (Messrs Norman Bewley, Arthur Chin, Ronald Paul and McDavitt, of Opunake) set out in a motor ear for Waitara. When passing Mr J. Kihby’e residence at Eitzrny, something went wrong with the steering gear of the car, which belonged to a local garage. The chauffeur lost control of the machine, and applied the brakes, but it shot ahead for about a couple of chains, and, leaving the fairway, ended its wild career by colliding with a telegraph pole. All its occupants were thrown out, and all escaped with a severe shaking and a few bruises, with the exception of Mr Bewley. It was at once seen that lie bad sustained grave injuries.

Temporary assistance was speedily forthcoming, and subsequently Mr Bewley was taken in the ambulance to the hospital, where it was found that his leg was badly smashed, necessitating amputation above the knee, but the shock was so severe that death supervened.
